The most depressed country in Africa is Nigeria, according to the World Health Organization (WHO). In its 2017 World Health Day message, WHO identified the prevalence rate as 3.9 per cent (over 7 million Nigerians) of the entire population. They say the rising suicide trend can be drastically reduced by understanding depression to be a preventable and treatable ailment.

Direct beneficiaries from this project will be over 3,000 students in Senior Secondary Schools starting in Oshun and Ibadan during the project duration, October 2017 through September 2019. Beyond the project period, the sustainable elements include a referral protocol, experienced trainers, normalized conversations around depression, and the online curriculum (BreakFreeFromDepression.orgprovided by Boston Children’s Hospital.

The two previous Peer Leadership & Depression Prevention global grant projects achieved outcomes measured by pre- and post surveys in Puerto Rico and India, respectively:
  • 146% > 671%            Knowledge increase
  • 10% >   41%              Negative Attitude decrease
  • 32% >   62%             Confidence in Help-Seeking
The Rotary Club of Wellesley Foundation is seeking donation commitments totaling $5,000 to reach the requisite $15,000 portion of the global grant. This amount would be  multiplied by both the district and Rotary International Foundation for a total project budget of $52,500 to deliver clinical support to the students, training of trainers and peer leaders, consulting to the trainers and faculty, school equipment, and supplies.
